Session 01 · Before departure
Start with a human connection
Introduce your role, use respectful forms of address, and invite questions.

Rehearse it: With a colleague, introduce yourself, explain your role, and ask how the person prefers to be addressed. Switch roles and repeat without reading.
Session 02 · Before departure
Work alongside an interpreter
State your language limits and arrange help for a clear conversation.

Rehearse it: Practice pausing when you do not understand. Explain your language limits and request an interpreter. Do not guess at an unfamiliar clinical explanation.
Session 03 · Arrival & screening
Listen during screening day
Practice basic history questions within your assigned role and the team's interpreting process.

Rehearse it: Use a fictional screening conversation. Ask one question at a time, listen, and use the interpreter workflow when the response goes beyond your language ability.
Session 04 · Arrival & screening
Clarify the body part and the side
Understand orthopedic location vocabulary and ask for clarification.

Rehearse it: Practice distinguishing right, left, hip, and knee with a partner. This language exercise does not replace the clinical team's identity, site-verification, or surgical time-out process.

Ask about roles, timing, locations, and whom to contact.

Rehearse it: Rehearse a first-day introduction with a local counterpart. Ask how the team organizes its work and how to request help. Listen before offering your own assumptions.
Session 06 · Recovery & rehabilitation
Talk with the rehabilitation team
Practice mobility vocabulary without prescribing an exercise or a restriction.

Rehearse it: Practice asking about a fictional patient's home setting and support. Movement, weight-bearing limits, and rehabilitation instructions must come from the treating team's plan.
Session 07 · Discharge & continuity
Make room for questions before discharge
Support questions and interpreter-assisted understanding of the team's approved instructions.

Rehearse it: Use fictional, organization-approved discharge material with a qualified interpreter or language reviewer. Practice inviting questions and checking understanding; do not invent medication, wound-care, or return instructions.

Practice continuity questions and learn from local colleagues after the trip.

Rehearse it: Rehearse a handoff with a local-team counterpart using a fictional case. Confirm who owns follow-up communication, then identify one language skill to keep practicing after returning home.
These are self-study language examples, not a clinical readiness assessment. Local terminology varies. For patient care, use your team’s approved interpreting process and instructions.
